Lovers of Kate Bush are in for a rare treat this September, as Jennifer Kingwell gives new life to classic album ‘Hounds of Love’ with a spectacular one-night-only concert. Don't miss this highlight of the 2014 Melbourne Fringe.
The Ninth Wave is a highly collaborative, richly theatrical realisation of one of Bush's most iconic albums, featuring critically acclaimed singer Kingwell (also a well-loved PBS broadcaster, writer, composer and formerly of multiple Fringe award winning cabaret duo, The Jane Austen Argument).
The production is headed up by an entirely female creative team, including direction by Kat Henry (A.D. The Speechmaker and Sydney Chamber Opera 2014). The scale of this ambitious collaboration encompasses over a dozen musicians, actors, dancers, singers, set designers, sound designers and costumiers. Kingwell says this approach is informed by her love of cabaret guest spots and sketches.
Kingwell will be joined by her band The Garland Thugs: a collection of some of the finest young musicians in Australia, including funk/hip-hop drummer Chad Blaster, jazz pianist Adam Rudegeair, cellist Jess Keeffe, soul queen singer Chelsea Wilson and indie goth singer Plum Greenand. Guests include cabaret countertenor diva Mama Alto and prog-rock visionary Justin Ashworth (from Glasfrosch).
Beyond just a note-for-note carbon copy of the original, The Ninth Wave will feature sonic and performative experimentation and bring to life the 'album within an album' on the 'Hounds of Love' b-side. Kingwell says the most exciting aspect is finding her own artistic approach to an existing work.
