For the first time at Sydney Opera House, renowned director Simon Phillips is taking on Rossini’s rarely staged irreverent comedy. Setting it in a 1950’s Italian seaside diner, this colourful farce is based on a story about a poet with writer’s block, and a collection of lovers and suitors! Leading the charge in these crazy antics are two of Australia’s most loved performers – Conal Coad as the somewhat irrational Geronio, and Emma Matthews in her role debut as his “life-embracing” wife, Fiorella. Joining them are two international singers both making their Opera Australia debuts – Brazilian tenor Luciano Botelho as Narciso and Italian bass-baritone Paolo Bordogna as the Turkish Prince Selim. The production is replete with vibrant, seaside themed sets and costumes by Gabriela Tylesova.
