It will be edgy. It will be gritty. It will be loud and dirty. It will be fun and funky. This is the sound of music changing. “They Say she’s Different” is an inspired story of the life of singer-songwriter Betty Davis that will hold its premiere performance at Ding Dong Lounge in Melbourne. A 60 minute soul-clapping piece that screams forth funk and rock finely complimented with talented theatrics for a sonic and visual feast to cultivate your senses. Blurring the lines between a live music gig and a theatrical performance “They Say She’s Different” will have you deeply immersed and captivated after the first boogie with the talented performance of Cecilia Low and musical director Tony Kopa (the Truth).
Taking you on a journey through the use of film, spoken word, live music and emotive lighting, the cast will send you back deep in the early 70’s immersing you in those explosive, hard-hitting times in which the raw, creative soul of Betty Davis lived. This piece is about kinship and its loss; of choices, mistakes, and of death. This piece is about a society’s right to change attitudes towards women, music, sex, life. This piece is about being heard and having a good time despite it all!

Cecilia Low; the driving force behind this production is no stranger to blending music with performance. Trained classically in Ballet (RAD), Piano and Flute (AMEB), and Voice and Musicology (Elder Conservatorium) the stage was in sight from a very young age. Such shows include: “RENT the Musical”, (Australia), “THE LION KING” (London, Shanghai, and Melbourne), “CHICAGO”, (Australia, Hong, Kong, London, Antwerp, and Basel). A treasured highlight was being billed alongside the Hoff, (!) as Roxy Hart to his Billy Flynn in London’s West End 2004, Adelphi Theatre. Cecilia has sung with various outfits singing all genres from hip-hop to afro beat, from acid jazz to jazz, from Latin to soul and exotica. Currently she is lead vocalist for ‘slide night”.
