Whilst the soldiers returning from World War I were afforded a heroes’ welcome, sadly the Vietnam Veterans did not receive a similar reception upon their return from that controversial conflict. Nevertheless, it was the Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia (WA) that rescued ANZAC Cottage, the war memorial and home for a wounded soldier and his family that was built in one day back in 1916, saving this historic site from almost certain demolition. The Vietnam Veterans’ restoration efforts have seen the Cottage returned to its original condition.
On August 17 from 1pm to 4pm, the Friends of ANZAC Cottage will honour Vietnam Veterans Day and the respect and honour in which these younger veterans hold their much older counterparts who took part in the Gallipoli landing. On this special day, a documentary, “Australians in Vietnam”, will be shown at 2pm and 3 pm and there will be a reading of the children’s book, “I Was Only Nineteen”, at 1:45 and 2:45.
ANZAC Cottage is located at 38 Kalgoorlie St Mt Hawthorn and entry is free, with afternoon tea available for a gold coin donation.
