Smarten-up and sort out your Will and Power of Attorney

Wallsend Plan Ahead Day this MoneySmart Week

Do you procrastinate about getting your financial affairs in order? This MoneySmart Week (1-7 September 2014) is the perfect time to get all your money matters sorted out once and for all, including estate planning. The national not-for-profit initiative aims to encourage adults to deal with important financial matters that many of us tend to overlook - or avoid – such as sorting out superannuation, insurance, getting budgetary advice or getting your planning ahead documents in place such as your Will or Power of Attorney.

People around Wallsend will be able to make their Will and Power of Attorney at a special Plan Ahead Day to be held on Saturday 6th September 2014by NSW Trustee & Guardian, one of the sponsors of MoneySmart Week.

According to Jim Cullen Branch Manager NSW Trustee & Guardian Newcastle, planning ahead for later life by preparing a Will and Power of Attorney is a crucial part of looking after your finances. “We may think looking after our finances is just about the ‘here and now’ but no one knows what is around the corner, and making the right decisions now is crucial to securing the financial future for yourself and your loved ones. Making a Will or Power of Attorney does not need to be complicated, and we are here to draft professional planning ahead documents for people,” he said.

“Both Wills and Powers of Attorney documents are everyday legal documents all Australian adults should have in place and yet 46% of people in NSW do not have a Will and 67% don’t have a Power of Attorney . If you don’t have these documents up to date, you should organise them quick smart - while you have the legal capacity to make these important decisions about your estate and future financial needs.

“Without a Will, you should not assume friends, family, partners and children will inherit your assets as you would have wished – instead it would be distributed according to the NSW succession laws.

“Equally important is a Power of Attorney – a legal document where you appoint a person or organisation to manage your financial and certain legal affairs, such as paying bills or signing legally binding documents on your behalf.” he said.

There is no charge to make or update a Will with NSW Trustee & Guardian when appointing them as your executor. Fees are charged upon deceased estate administration only. Similarly, there’s no charge to prepare a Power of Attorney with NSW Trustee & Guardian as Attorney, and fees are charged upon its activation. NSW Trustee & Guardian is the State’s largest Will maker and its team of legal experts can help answer all your questions. There is also plenty of information about why it’s important to plan ahead as well as details on how to get started on NSW Trustee & Guardian’s website www.tag.nsw.gov.au.
