It is well-known that women’s under-representation in the workforce and the gender pay gap are significant contributors to the large gap between the superannuation savings of Australian men and women.

What is less well known is that discrimination related to pregnancy, parental leave and on return to work after parental leave, is a significant factor in women’s workforce participation and their accumulation of retirement savings.

The findings from the Supporting Working Parents: Pregnancy and Return to Work National Review reveals the nature of discrimination experienced by mothers and fathers in workplaces and the multiple impacts including short and long term financial consequences such as retirement incomes and savings.

Many women in retirement are living in poverty. What can we do to ensure a more equitable retirement outcome? How can you and your company help? What practices can we put in place?

Closing the Gender Gap in Retirement Savings is an important issue facing our society today. If we don’t act now, another generation of women will face poverty.
