Leading South African director Mark Dornford-May previously adapted Bizet's Carmen to international acclaim in 2005, winning Berlin's Golden Bear. Now his famed Isango Ensemble relocates Puccini's tragic opera - and the source of Baz's Moulin Rouge - to the modern-day township of Khayelitsha and rescores it with vibrant marimbas and pounding kettle drums.

Where Puccini's Mimi died from tuberculosis, two million people still die annually from TB and this is a daily occurrence in the townships. We follow jazz singer Zolecka and the pure-hearted painter Mandisi as the star-crossed lovers in a drama that can still wring tears from stones.
