If you've seen Tabu you will know that Miguel Gomes is dedicated to the unpredictable, to the way stories can take on a life of their own. It is perhaps inevitable that he should come to The Arabian Nights, the fount of narrative plenitude. Over three films spanning six hours (the original stories went for a lot longer, so don't complain) our new Scheherazade holds forth with a marvellous, depressing and exhilarating set of tales of contemporary Portugal in the time of European economic austerity.

In Part Two, The Desolate One, Scheherazade recounts the ways that desolation invaded men through the law. This includes The Chronicle of the Escape of Simo Without Bowels, The Tears of the Judge, and the Owners of Dixie. A runaway murderer who can teleport himself to escape the police, dreams of prostitutes and partridges. A wounded cow will reminisce about a thousand-year-old olive tree. Chinese mail order brides are heard from. The residents of a tower block will piss inside lifts while surrounded by dead people and ghosts. Only the puppy dogs can find solace in any of this.
