If you've seen Tabu you will know that Miguel Gomes is dedicated to the unpredictable, to the way stories can take on a life of their own. It is perhaps inevitable that he should come to The Arabian Nights, the fount of narrative plenitude. Over three films spanning six hours (the original stories went for a lot longer, so don't complain) our new Scheherazade holds forth with a marvellous, depressing and exhilarating set of tales of contemporary Portugal in the time of European economic austerity.

In Part One, The Restless One, centres on work and the sense of Portugal as a country in crisis. People dream of mermaids and whales, but unemployment is spreading. There are animals that talk although it is highly improbable that they are listened to. In the face of this crisis, our director runs away leaving Scheherazade holding the bag. She responds with the Tale of the Men with the Hard-ons and The Swim of the Magnificents. Men of power have shameful erections while whales explode.
