By 1931, Sergei Eisenstein had revolutionised the way cinema was made, though he had become something of an embarrassment to Stalin. He travelled first to Hollywood and then to Mexico to shoot a new film to be titled Que Viva Mexico. Here was to undergo another revolution in a society in which sex and death featured so prominently.

Chaperoned by his guide Palomino Caedo, he was to discover a sexual awakening of sorts. Peter Greenaway's film explores the mind of a creative genius through ten passionate days. Full of wild exuberant imagery, this has been hailed as a massive return to form for Greenaway, a director who, like his hero Eisenstein, has always been ready to shock in the search for formal innovation.
