Fracking, the process of flushing shale oil to the surface, has generated massive controversy in equal proportions to its profitability. In some places its effects have been heavily localized. Such is the case in the state of North Dakota, where boom towns have developed around the oil industry.

This is conservative heartland country with little league baseball, fourth of July parades, Native American reservations, and farm families who have to adjust to new ways of life. Noah Hutton's measured, thoughtful documentary includes all the interested parties from the state legislatures to the reservations to the barrooms.

The film is also at pains to take the long view by placing the current boom in the context of paleo-cycles, climate change, and the ecology of the future. A must-see for those interested in environmental issues, but also the ways in which resources, industries and agriculture are finding it increasingly difficult to reconcile their interests.
