Mark Cousins first came to international prominence with The Story of Film, but he has quickly become the film world's most prolific essayist. In recent years he has become a traveller with films on Iraq, Albania and Sardinia. Along with Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle, he now he turns to his home city, intent on seeing it with fresh eyes. He invites us to see the city anew through the colour on the streets, through the paintings on its walls, through the way its old ladies talk, through its archival footage.

It is a voyage led by a 10,000 year old woman that will take us from the Titanic, to the Troubles, past The Creature from the Black Lagoon, to its final utopian vision of grace that will, of course, lead to Van Morrison. "The risks a documentarian with a camera faces are physical, emotional and ethical.

This cinematographer navigated all, allowing us to care deeply about people while creating images that propel us through a landscape of nightmares."
