China 1999. In Fenyang, childhood friends Liangzi, a coal miner and Zhang, the owner of a gas station, are both in love with the town beauty Tao. When she eventually marries the wealthier Zhang, they have a son named Dollar. Australia 2025. Dollar no longer speaks Chinese. All that he remembers of his mother is her name.

Jia Zhangke (The World, A Touch of Sin) has emerged as China's most prominent filmmaker, and it is immensely intriguing that his new film, which premiered at Cannes, should be partially shot in Australia.
