Art intersects with health in a new exhibition at Mosman Art Gallery this Spring. Titled 'An Unending Shadow' acclaimed mother and daughter artists Ann Cape and Sophie Cape have made a series of powerful new works exploring the phenomena of dementia and its impact within the community.

This unique intergenerational response aims to raise awareness of and help reduce the social stigma of conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It examines the emotional and psychological ‘spaces’ that people with dementia inhabit, as well as those of their family, friends and loved ones.

Ann Cape, one of Australia's foremost portrait artists, has captured sufferers and their careers in a series of sensitive, subtle and respectful drawings and paintings for a more general view. Sophie Cape, a young award winning abstract expressionist, has responded to the theme with large intense, emotional landscapes, evoking her inner feelings to this deeply personal topic.

Both Ann and Sophie Cape are dealing with the day to day circumstances of having a close relative living with dementia. So this exhibition not only highlights the struggle of those with the condition but of the ongoing impact to family members that many people don't see or understand.
This exhibition coincides with National Dementia Awareness Month.

Public Programs include a Mixed Media Master Class with Sophie Cape (6 Oct) and Drawing Master Class with Ann Cape (10 Nov).

On Tuesday 20 October at 10;30am - 12noon - a 'Special Event in Conversation' with both artists will be hosted by Richard Morecroft.
