The vibrant women’s choir Illumina Voices is looking forward to its first Adelaide Fringe performance in 2015. Around the World in 80 Minutes will be a magic carpet ride to five continents with songs and music celebrating the diversity of our world.

These enthusiastic women will sing songs from different cultures in beautiful harmonies, in languages both foreign and familiar and with some movement to exciting rhythms. Accompaniments include the didgeridoo played by Peter Webb, drums, percussion and a lyrical obligato played by the talented clarinettist Charise Altmann. Guest Artist “Eclectica” will play a specially commissioned piece for clarinet trio by the Adelaide composer Daniel Schricker.

The musical journey will begin in Australia with a contemporary piece and two modern arrangements of traditional numbers, and end in Africa with the spirited and rousing songs, Dubula and Siyahamba.

Included in the programme will be the ever popular Bridge Over Troubled Water and What a Wonderful World as well as the less well known and haunting Chinese Kanding Folk Song. The plight of Guatemalan orphans is highlighted in the stirring rhythms of Oye! and there is a hidden message to slaves in America in Follow the Drinking Gourd. Two contrasting songs from Eastern Europe will feature, as well as the lively Spanish Boleras Sevillanas, complete with castanets.
Based in Adelaide, Illumina is a dynamic and creative women’s choir established by Rosemary Nairn OAM six years ago and now under the direction of Deborah Munro. The choir has an extensive repertoire of classical, traditional, popular and contemporary music and presents two major performances each year.
