Standout local and international comedy and performance artists will feature around Balmain’s Gladstone Park over the weekend of September 19 and 20 for the debut of BuskFest at Balmain.

Leichhardt Mayor Rochelle Porteous said residents and visitors will have the chance to get down to Balmain to see some great entertainers from around the world performing across multiple genres from comedy to magic to music at the inaugural BuskFest @ Balmain event.

“The debut of our busking festival will be a great weekend of entertainment in Balmain featuring Gladstone Park as the centerpiece of an event that will draw some world renowned international buskers as well as some great local and emerging talent,” Cr Porteous said.

“The timing of our event also means we have a fantastic line up of international and Australian buskers warming up in Balmain ahead of the well-established annual Coffs Busking Festival.”

Cr Porteous said aside from Gladstone Park, the event will feature two Darling Street performance spaces at Loyalty Square and at the Balmain Markets space in the grounds of St Andrews Church.

“The festival has a strong focus on how it can increase foot traffic in the main shopping areas in a boost to local businesses – the three featured performance spaces have been designed to also draw crowds along Darling Street itself.”

To assist local shopkeepers to get involved, Cr Porteous said Council last night resolved to allow local businesses a fee-free opportunity during the festival to put out their footpath display type furniture of less than 3 square metres and A frames of less than one square metre.

“This license fee waiver will apply across both days of the Busking Festival as long as all pedestrian safety and public liability insurances are met,” Cr Porteous said.

“This will not only help the local businesses but also add to the life and vibrancy of the main street during the weekend – as well as giving the shopkeepers an early indication of how Council’s new footpath licences will work during the official trial period starting 1 October.”

Cr Porteous said BuskFest @ Balmain is also a way to encourage more buskers to come to the Leichhardt municipality and return again.

“Hopefully through the success of this first event, we will promote our LGA as a good place for buskers to busk,” Cr Porteous said. “This first busking festival is planned to be part of a busking series of events that grows with time and also spreads interest in busking across the LGA as another way of enlivening our main streets.”

Busking featured performers include:

Bruce Airhead: The unbelievable metamorphosis of a man and a 6-foot balloon in a 30-minute comedy show.

Kiki: a Kazardorian farm girl contortionist with a twisted understanding of the English language.

Magic Jake: Winner Best Junior Magician at the 2014 Australian Junior Stage Awards.

California: Hugely talented physical comedienne performs unique and outlandish acts of skill, comedy and grace.

Benny B: A unique combination of elegant juggling, bizarre physical comedy and outrageous audience participation.
