Fringe World Festival 2015 and Operabox are thrilled to present the modern Australian premiere of Gaetano Donizetti’s Tudor Queen opera Anna Bolena. This fully-staged production is presented on a grand scale complete with a stellar cast, chorus and full orchestra in state-of-the-art theatres with orchestra pits.

A thrilling story of power and desire, Anna Bolena portrays the heart-stopping final days of Queen Anne Boleyn, the infamous second wife of Henry VIII.

Director Sarah McKellar’s dynamic and relevant production explores the psychology of a Queen who lost power, identity and eventually her life when she lost the favour of the king. “Anne Boleyn has long been an intriguing historical figure. For some, she is The Other Woman they love to hate, and for others she is The Victim,” says McKellar. “Donizetti’s opera is fantastic in that he doesn’t give us a cut-and-dried Anne – he shows us both her strength and vulnerability. The opera takes place in a royal court rife with politics and fear. Everybody is a spy, nobody feels safe. They turn on each other. People are beheaded. This is the Game of Thrones of the Tudor period.”

Christopher Dragon, one of Australia’s most exciting young conductors brings Donizetti’s dramatic and melodic score to life alongside one of Australia’s most outstanding and popular tenors Henry Choo, most recently critically acclaimed in Perth as Cassio in West Australian Opera’s 2014 Otello. Henry will perform with a cast of Perth opera singers Jenna Robertson, Michael Heap, Eva-Marie Middleton, Thomas Friberg, Courtney Pitman and Simon Wood, a chorus and a stunning 35-piece orchestra.

Due to the success of Showtime’s TV series The Tudors, Anna Bolena now has a place in the repertory of opera houses all over the world but has never been performed in Western Australia. Anna Bolena has only been performed in Australia for one night only in Sydney,139 years ago in 1875! Take this rare opportunity to experience Donizetti’s dramatic opera at a theatre near you. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
