Bring your kids to meet the band at Kids’ Proms.

Introduce your kids to the instruments of the concert band at the Inner West Community Band’s Kids’ Proms at 10am on Sunday 19 April in the Leichhardt Town Hall.

Let your kids share the joy and excitement of seeing and hearing the sounds of a concert band for the first time in this fun and interactive concert. They’ll see how trumpets toot, saxophones sing and percussion performs.

The concert will feature upbeat and familiar tunes, demos of each instrument, opportunities to join in with the music-making and even a chance to conduct the band!

The performance will go for a kid-friendly 40 minutes, with a chance afterwards for children to meet the members of the band and see the instruments up close.

Music will include ‘Let It Go’ from Disney’s Frozen, ‘Blues Brothers’, ‘Instant Concert’, and fun surf songs in ‘Big Fun In The Sun’, plus a selection of nursery rhymes, making the concert suitable for children of all ages, as well as a fun concert for adults.

“Our Kids’ Proms is a wonderful opportunity for parents to introduce their kids to the different sounds made by the instruments of the concert band, including flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, French horns, euphoniums, tubas and percussion,” said Danika Allars, musical director and co-founder of the Inner West Community Band.

“In addition to the fun songs, we’re doing special feature spots where band members will showcase what’s special about their instrument, so kids will really get to hear and see each instrument by itself,” said Danika.

“It’ll be a fun morning of musical discovery, so bring the whole family!”

Formed in 2010, the Inner West Community Band was founded by Danika and a group of friends originally in the Sydney University Wind Orchestra, as their time at university drew to a close and they wanted to share the fun of being in a concert band with the local community. The band now has 40 wind, brass and percussion instrumentalists and is always keen to recruit new players.

“The band is a place where community members of all ages and experience levels can come together to share their love for music. We’ve made it an environment that’s both friendly and encouraging, yet challenging and musically enriching,” said Danika.

“We particularly invite any French horn, flute, oboe and percussion players to come join us – it doesn’t matter how much or little experience in playing you have. We’d love to hear from you!”

The Inner West Community Band performs at local markets, fairs and other community events.

Join the Inner West Community Band at the Kids’ Proms for a morning of musical magic and let your kids discover the joys of playing and listening to the instruments of the concert band.
