Loving Repeating – a musical of Gertrude Stein is an inspired new musical about the brilliant American expatriate writer, Gertrude Stein and her passion for life, language and the thrill of romantic love.

The Australian Professional Premiere is at Chapel off Chapel from 21 January – 8 February 2015.

The great modernist and artistic gadfly - Stein was one of the most influential queer artists of the past century, and she and her expatriate milieu changed the way we see the world. One half of the twentieth century’s most famous lesbian couple, Stein is thought to have coined the word ‘gay’ for meaning homosexual.

Loving Repeating explores the subversive world of Gertrude Stein: her capricious love affair with language, with self-expression, and with her lifelong companion Alice B. Toklas. The musical follows Stein from her student days in the late 19th century to the height of her artistic era in Paris and beyond.

Loving Repeating has been adapted from the writings of Gertrude Stein. It is an inspired homage to this pivotal 20th-century artist.

With a live five piece band, Loving Repeating features a wonderful cast, including: Gertrude Stein Deidre Rubenstein; Young Gertrude, Caitlin Berry; Middle-age Gertrude, Jennifer Peers; Young Alice, Gillian Cosgriff; Alice B Toklas, Nicole Melloy; Helen Furr, Emily Paddon-Brown; Georgine Skeene, Sage Douglas; John, Vincent Hooper; Paul, Tobias Madden; Guy, Tim Carney; Ensemble Suzie Melloy, Oliver Reading, Mitchell Ralston and Alex Given.

The creative team includes: Jason Langley, Director; Michael Ralph, Choreographer; Ben Kiley, Musical Director; Nathan Weyers, Set Design; and Travis Macfarlane, Lighting Design.

Vic Theatre Company (VTC) is an exciting new theatre company based in Melbourne founded by Glenn Ferguson. VTC's aim is to produce the highest quality theatre using professional actors and providing a more even solution to the profit share model.

‘Actors in VTC's first show Loving Repeating will receive a weekly wage for the rehearsal period, as well as an even split of the profit share pool’, says producer, Glenn Ferguson. ‘I consider this a priority over the company taking a cut before the profit is divided. VTC aims to produce sustainable theatre, theatre that has the potential that if sold out actors would receive more than the Live Performance Award (LPA) award rate per week and the company would have enough money left over to produce their next show’.

Ferguson has raised money from small business owners, friends, family and crowd funding. He believes that by truly getting everyone on board with his vision he will be able to continue to produce innovative new and revived theatre whilst contributing to the already thriving independent theatre scene in Melbourne.

Glenn studied Musical Theatre at VCA for a year then WAAPA for 3 years in Perth. Graduating from WAAPA in 2010 his roles include: Male Swing in Comedy of Errors with The Australian Shakespeare Company and Ensemble in Macbeth, Don Giovanni and Salome for Opera Australia. He also played Will in Oklahoma for Harvest Rain, followed by Pippin for Magnormous and has just finished a 3 month tour of the wildly popular children's show Peppa Pig Live. Glenn was honoured to be one of the Top 30 finalists in the 2013 Rob Guest Endowment.
