Pilgrim Uniting Church is holding its Annual Symposium, on the Topic: Marriage Equality and the Church.

We hold this in partnership with the Research Unit for the Study of Society, Law and Religion of the University of Adelaide.

Rev David Pattee is the RUSSLR Orator and will give the Oration on the topic: “Political and Theological Reflections on Just Marriage: Queering the Holy Estate”. David is the Visiting Preacher at Pilgrim Uniting Church in October-November. Pastor of Kent United Church of Christ Cleveland, Ohio USA, he holds an M Div from Chicago Theological Seminary.

The other panel speakers are:
Rev Margaret Mayman, Minister of Pitt Street Uniting Church in Sydney, formerly Minister of St Andrews on the Terrace, Wellington New Zealand. She will speak on “The History of Marriage”, the topic of her doctoral thesis.

Professor Carol Johnson, Coordinator, Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Adelaide. Her topic is “Church and State: The Politics of Same-Sex Marriage”.

There will be time for the audience to discuss what they have heard and to ask questions of the panel, a bit like a Q and A session, as well as for the panel to reflect together after the question time on any major themes they saw emerging from the whole experience.

The United Churches of Christ in the USA was the first Christian denomination in that country to ordain gay/lesbian Ministers, and later the first denomination to agree to marry same-sex couples. He has been involved in these changes to his Church for many decades and speaks from a broad understanding of how these have been impacted on and in turn impacted on political decisions about equal marriage.

Pilgrim Uniting Church and RUSSLR work together on these Symposiums around a topic of major community interest, to open up the topic from a range of perspectives, so that the audience can think critically about the topic and come to their own, better-informed positions as a result of the experience. We do not endeavour to know the answers or believe there is one answer to any question facing our community and society generally, but seek to be better informed ourselves along with the community of the City of Adelaide.

The evening concludes with a supper in Pilgrim Centre Hall where informal conversations may take place over coffee, tea and food.
