Meaningful Movies NSW will screen "Silenced Voices" at its regular monthly screening of documentaries/ movies that are based on significant human rights issues. This 2012 Sri Lankan film is about freedom of speech in a country recently wracked by civil war where journalists have been targeted for assassination because they expose war crimes committed by the state. The film maker, Beate Arnestad produced this film at great personal risk.

A former UN staff member writes that '"Silenced Voices" is a reminder of the constant need for free and independent journalism'. We are screening this film just when news that two of the journalists imprisoned in Egypt have been pardoned. Australian Peter Greste is out of the Egyptian jail but still has a criminal conviction against him.
