Roundheads & Peakheads by revolutionary German dramatist, Bertolt Brecht, is a satire written in 1936, during the rise of Nazism. The play originally was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, but Brecht rewrote it and set it in the fictitious country of Woop-Woop, where the rulers maintain power, and attempt to stem a revolution (Brecht was a committed socialist), by setting the majority ‘roundheads’ against the minority ‘peakheads’. Thus, racism is fuelled to distract the people from the more inherently important social issues. With Brecht’s great sense of theatricality, stylistic diversity & music he creates a trenchant, and uncomfortably funny, social and political statement. The play is subtitled Money Calls to Money and Brecht described it as “a tale of horror.”
