Discover the possibilities when you escape the confines of the computer screen and reconnect with your head, heart and hands!

The rebels and dreamers at Old School New School are showcasing fresh new work from the hugely popular Copperplate Collective in the inaugural exhibition Someday Is Now.

The Copperplate Collective brings together students, designers, illustrators and thinkers from across Melbourne who are proudly nurturing the true art and skill of copperplate calligraphy, driven by a desire to craft and create typography by hand.

Someday Is Now explores the potential of calligraphy, placing this age old art form in a fresh, modern context by recreating and resurrecting the wise words of Sister Corita Kent – an artist, trailblazer, educator and rebel nun, who practiced screen printing during the 1960s, and whose “Art Department Rules” have become popular with practicing creatives across the globe.

Exhibition works by 23 talented artists – including special guest, Los Angeles based calligrapher Linda Yoshida – will be displayed on a custom built ‘clothesline’ erected within the studio space – paying homage to the history of the Abbotsford Convent as a once thriving industrial laundry that serviced businesses across Melbourne. This collection of bright, inspired works push the art of copperplate beyond the expected, to a bold and contemporary new level.

Sunday 8 November is the big day! In addition to the Someday Is Now exhibition there will be opportunities to meet the makers, watch live lettering demonstrations, learn a new skill in our brush script and copperplate workshops and take home a personalised piece of your own. The day also coincides with the Abbotsford Convent's newest Open Spaces curated, multi-arts event where you can enjoy a jam-packed day of festivities and explore some of the creative spaces and creations nested around the convent grounds!

The doors will swing open on Friday night for the opening and everyone is invited to pop by, celebrate the end of the week and get an early sneak peek at the gorgeous work. The exhibition will then be on display for two full days only – Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November.
