The Mevlevi Sufi tradition, renowned for their spiritual whirling dances, is an ascetic Sufi order founded in 1273 in Konya, Turkey.

The group represents one branch of the Sufi tradition of Islam that focuses on love, tolerance and the worship of God. Wearing long, flowing robes and tall hats, the Whirling Dervishes twirl to live music played on ancient instruments, a form of worship said to bring them closer to God.

This special event will be performed by the Ensemble and Whirling Dervishes Group, composed of artists from Konya. Based on four sections of vocal and instrumental compositions, it will be performed by at least one singer, a flute player (called neyzen), a kettle-drummer and a cymbal player, all authentic, traditional Turkish music instruments.

The Sufi music and spiritual dance is designated as an 'Intangible Cultural Heritage' by UNESCO (The UN's Cultural and Scientific Body).

This free cultural event is presented by the Turkish Government as a part of the Year of Turkey in Australia 2015 Program.

Free Event, However Booking Is Essential.
