Terrifying! Liberty, Threats & Australia’s New Security Legislation

Since the tragedy of 9/11, successive Australian governments have introduced a raft of new laws for the purposes of countering terrorism on our shores. For most Australians it has proved well-nigh impossible to keep up with the legislation, let alone fully appreciate the implications for themselves and their rights under Australian law or for the institutions and cultural expressions that underpin our democracy. Join us as our panel of experts explores these questions through a consideration of the most recent legislation with respect to reporting operations, access to computers and online data, warrants, preventative detention and the like.

A Q&A will follow the panel discussion.

Guest panellists include: Ms Karen Middleton, political journalist, seasoned commentator and writer. Professor George Williams, a leading Australian constitutional lawyer and public commentator Mr Paul Murphy, CEO, Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance.

Moderator: Mr Eric Sidoti, Director, Whitlam Institute

Tickets $15/$12 concession. Bookings or 02 8839 3399.

A panel discussion presented by the Whitlam Institute within the University of Western Sydney, the NSW Writers’ Centre, UWS School of Law and Riverside Theatres, in association with the Behind the Lines exhibition of the best political cartoons from 2014.
