Monash Uni Student Theatre presents the Australian premiere stage adaptation of Margaret Atwood's internationally acclaimed novel, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. May 28 - June 6.

“There is more than one kind of freedom; Freedom to….and Freedom from.”

Offred (Of Fred) survives in a world where women, and men, each have their specific place, and a desire for freedom is crushed. But they tell her she is part of the blessed one per cent.

In Atwood’s much-loved, globally acclaimed novel of speculative fiction, a military theocracy has taken over and created The Republic of Gilead ‘for the better’. With a fruitful womb, Offred bears the sacred duty to repopulate Gilead as a Handmaid, and is hereafter marked by red. Her life, her name, her body; everything is now owned by the government.

If she deviates, she will be hanged at The Wall or sent to The Colonies. A life without freedom must be better than no life at all.

But even this repressive state cannot destroy desire – neither Offred’s nor that of the two men on whom her future depends.

Vivid, compelling, and raw, Atwood’s novel has been beautifully adapted for the stage by Monash Uni Student Theatre Artistic Director, Yvonne Virsik, and showcases the talents of Melbourne’s future theatre generation. The production intimately observes a society with frightening parallels to our own, a society which, Yvonne says “demonstrates the evil that can be done by denying individuals agency over their own lives and identity.”
