What price would you pay for fame?

Set in 1949 New York, this sardonic tale of narcissism and betrayal sees an ageing Broadway star and her satellites befriend a lost waif who is not what she seems, precipitating a giddy spiral into treachery and loss.

What price would you pay for fame? How far would you go for adulation? For glory?

Immersing its audience in the style, music and sensibilities of 1949 New York, this sardonic tale of narcissism and betrayal sees an ageing Broadway star and her satellites befriend a lost waif who is not what she seems – precipitating a giddy downward spiral into treachery and loss.

The Wisdom of Eve – like its much-loved movie counterpart All About Eve, which starred the legendary Bette Davis – is a glorious ‘bitch fest’ marked by irresistibly wry and snappy dialogue. It is given a unique psychological slant in this new production by leading Melbourne psychologist Meredith Fuller: ‘the international expert on the bitch at work’.

We first meet young Eve Harrington standing alone and forlorn in the rain by the stage door of the theatre where Margo Crane is appearing in her latest hit. Margo befriends Eve and welcomes her into her circle. Before long, Eve has made herself indispensable – straightening out the clutter of Margo’s dressing room and her life. Yet all the while Eve is quietly plotting to replace Margo on stage and inveigle her own Hollywood career.
