City Recital Hall Presents Toumani and Sidiki Diabate

“dazzling virtuosity that no other living kora player can match...” - The Guardian

“'It's like an entire music industry in one family…” - The Guardian

Celebrated as one of Africa’s most talented musicians Toumani Diabate and his son Sidiki bring their unique musical flavour to Sydney for one night only.

More than any other kora player, Grammy award-winner Toumani Diabate has brought this 21-string West African harp to the world’s attention. The virtuoso was born into an exceptional musical family of 71 continuous generations of kora players and griots (West African historians).

His influences are sourced from many cultures from Indian classical music, Spanish flamenco, radical free jazz with trombonist Roswell Rudd and even a wild take on Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. Toumani has a collaborated with a number of world renowned artists inclusing Ali Farka Touré, Taj Mahal, Björk and Gorillaz/Blur frontman Damon Albarn.

He wowed Sydney Festival audiences in 2010, performing with his Symmetric Orchestra, but this year will be joined on stage by his eldest son Sidiki in an incredible kora duo performance. Sidiki is also a griot and master kora player is a well known Hip-Hop star in Mali, where his concerts have filled stadiums. Toumani and Sidiki’s latest collaboration addresses the cultural changes that have taken place in Mali over recent years, where bans on music were imposed in northern regions, and their songs express weighty concerns with exhilarating energy and joyful optimism.
