Velet Helmet is Brisbane's favourite underground cabaret, bringing together performers from the full spectrum of arts - dance, theatre, music, comedy, cabaret, burlesque and poetry. Emerging and established stars present new and provocative works that titillate, tantalize and challenge.

Our November event is a portmanteu of concepts and constructs. A Movember culture bender, this party harks back to the early days of Motor City. A journey, started way back in 1959, giving a voice to to those who had been unheard. A journey, that walked hand in hand with the hard-won emancipatory victories of the era. A journey, making the music visual through dance. An androgynous journey into the present day, breaking down cultural and gendered stereotypes.

The pandemonium is sealed neatly behind the glitzy gowns, moustaches and choreographed tones of Motown is revisited in this night of reflection upon a brave new world, where things didn't always go to plan, but the music was always electric.

This is about juxtaposition. The easy listening of the beautiful voices versus the subversive menace of their message. The energy of the funk versus the prohibition of its performance. The primal nature of soul and the revolution it heralded.

You can expect to see a variety or artists exploring the themes of the era, all soaked in a great big dose of luxurious and delicious music.

Our guest programmer is the lovely Clare Cowley. Clare is an independent songwriter who also creates challenging performance works that play with concepts of stereotype and presumption. She is curating an evocative and sublime evening for you all.
