Maca Limited Classics Series
Ravel’s Bolero
Conductor: Asher Fisch
Piano: Ingrid Fliter

WASO Chorus
The last concert in the West Australian Symphony Orchestra’s 2015 Classics Series takes on a distinctly Spanish feel with an intoxicating mix of colour and rhythm through all five selected pieces. Audiences will be swept away by the infectious sights and sounds of Spain in this dazzling concert conducted by Principle Conductor Asher Fisch.

The concert commences with Seville-born composer Joaquin Turina’s Danzas Fantásticas. Although originally scored for piano, it is this orchestrated version, with its romantic melodies and flourishing rhythms, which has rightfully become Turina’s best known and most popular work.

Alborada del gracioso, the first of two offerings in this program by Maurice Ravel, likewise started out as a work for the piano. Ravel was born in the French Pyrenees only a short distance from the Spanish border; and this piece exemplifies how his music straddled that geological boundary.
The first half of the program concludes with Chôros No.10 Rasga o coração by Hector Villa-Lobos. This exciting and colourful score depicts the great variety and expanse of the composer’s native Brazil and its people and also features the WASO Chorus.

The WASO is delighted to have enticed Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter, to stay on in Perth following her appearance in the Beethoven & Mahler concerts to perform Manuel de Falla’s Noches en los jardines de España ( Nights in the Gardens of Spain), his tribute to the evocative beauty of the gardens of his Spanish homeland.

The program concludes with Ravel’s mesmerising masterwork Bolero.
