Horn Power

Prepare to be blown away by Roman Ponomariov, Horn and Julie O'Connor, Soprano.

This concert features perhaps the greatest horn concerto written in modern times together with a new evocative composition for Soprano and Orchestra by George Dreyfus. It concludes with Brahms' acclaimed first Symphony – Brahms said it took him 21 years to write this symphony as he was overawed by Beethoven's symphonies and was not satisfied with his earlier drafts.

Richard Strauss' first horn concerto was written for his father, one of the great horn players of his time, who never played it, claiming it was too difficult for him. Our soloist will be Roman Ponomariov. Roman last performed with Zelman Symphony in 2006 alongside the legendary Barry Tuckwell.

The new Dreyfus work will be sung by Julie O'Connor, another artist who has previously performed with us. We are honoured to have been invited by George to premiere his tribute to the fallen as we commemorate the centenary of the ANZACs at Gallipoli.

Mark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm.
