Brace yourself Adelaide, because the Heavens are about to open at the Fringe: Peter & Bambi Heaven, to be exact, and they'll be raining down glitz, glamour and magic tricks in a variety spectacular that's even more overdone than this weather metaphor.
Renowned from Mudgereeba to Miami (Miami, Queensland, that is), the Gold Coast's most beloved dancing illusionists will explode into the Garden of Unearthly Delights to redefine entertainment with their magic-slash-variety-slash-chat show: Peter & Bambi Heaven - The Magic Inside.
Who are Peter and Bambi Heaven? Think David Copperfield and Claudia Schiffer, circa 1992, on a cruise ship. Now imagine them hosting a variety show directed by Christopher Guest with a little satirical help from Amy Sedaris. Throw in some sequins, a few dance routines and some less-than-convincing wigs, and you're almost there.
With appearances by famous special guests like viral YouTube star Miss Teen South Carolina 2007 presenting her notorious "everywhere like such as" education speech, some shambolic magic tricks including levitation and hypnotism, and plenty of audience participation to boot, Peter & Bambi Heaven - The Magic Inside would be the perfect variety show, if it weren't already the perfect parody of one. Please note: Peter and Bambi make no guarantee that guests will be famous, or special.
With their triple threat of magic, dance and even more magic, Peter and Bambi are truly a "Heaven-sent" entertainment duo, even if things don't always go to plan.
They're also the ridiculous creation of real-life husband and wife duo Asher Treleaven and Gypsy Wood, multi award-winning entertainers from Melbourne, Victoria.
One of Australia’s most critically-acclaimed comedians, Asher Treleaven has been described as a "post-modern Barry Humphries", and has won a slew of awards including The Age Comedian of the Year, The Age Critics' Choice Award, The Brisbane Powerhouse Award and the 2014 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment for his role in the international smash hit stage show "La Soiree". He has also been twice nominated for a Barry Award, and was nominated the Best Newcomer at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe.
Named by Time Out as Australia's "Queen of Kink", Gypsy Wood is a performance artist and comedian who has done strip teases for Bon Jovi, Sting and several Australian Prime Ministers. She made headlines in 2007 when she stripped for then PM Kevin Rudd on TV show "The Chaser’s War on Everything", an act she sort of reprised in 2009 when she burst out of a cake at former PM Bob Hawke's 80th birthday party to do a strip tease dressed as other former PM John Howard.
Drawn from their real life experiences performing on cruise ships and at Fringe festivals around the world, and imbued with their love of the surreal and the satirical, Peter & Bambi Heaven - The Magic Inside is a hilarious spoof with a magic touch.
Peter & Bambi Heaven - The Magic Inside runs February 12 to March 13 at The Deluxe in the Garden of Unearthly Delights.
What the critics are saying:
"Over-the-top ridiculousness at its best! Painfully funny ... absolutely endearing." - PerthNow
"Takes inspired silliness to new heights... An absurdly enjoyable hour of frivolous and foolish fun!" Australian Stage
"Asher Treleaven reminds us what the surrealist adventure of the Fringe is all about.... He could be a young, post-modern Barry Humphries." - The Australian
