Etched, crafted, carved and coaxed into being in-between Brisbane and Brooklyn, ‘Culture How Could You?’ is the debut album by Alice Night.

Bold and conscious storytelling spun against that intimate musical frontier of expression opened up by artists such as Bjork, Beth Orton and Ani Difranco, ‘Culture How Could You?’ is at once radical honesty and transmuted reflection. This is an album through which Night asks; ‘are there better ways of living and being? Can we dream again of flying? and what traits do we need to cultivate in ourselves in order to treat each other, ourselves and the planet with deep respect and care?'

The songs that feature on ‘Culture How Could You?’ began after Night formed a collaborative duo with ARIA nominated and APRA award winning composer Robert Davidson (Topology). Together, blending folk instrumentation and harmony with sound art and innovative composition, the two devised a body of music that combines contemporary classical motifs with pop sensibility.

Says Night: “In 2014 I went to New York basically to watch music and be inspired... To be exposed to the New York live arts scene and write music that echoed those inspirations. I wrote half the album there, scrawling away in cafes with my guitar in hand, relying on the kindness of strangers. Once home in Australia I worked with electronic artists, composers, experimental sound makers, dancers and theatre makers to bring the recordings and a live show to life.”

When Night returned to Brisbane she reconnected with Davidson and alongside producer Liam Malby, recording everywhere from hinterland studios in northern NSW to the forests of Tasmania and garages in Brisbane, creating the album’s musical beds. Other input came in the form of violinist Cye Wood from Cave in The Sky, Graham Ritchie on synth, and noise & drone artist Ma Ya Ga Ng Re Ne. A combination of live and ‘found sound’ electronic drums features no less than three different rhythm makers, and intrinsic in its timbre is Davidson’s 200-year-old double bass.

A student at The National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) Alice Night is a budding playwright and novelist, ‘Culture How Could You?’ is the sound of a bold, conscious contemporary new artist coming into her own. Out now through God Queen Records, catch Alice launching the album up and down the east coast this winter.
