Acclaimed classical ensemble Perth Chamber Orchestra (PCO) brings the music of one of the world’s greatest-ever composers to life in Bach by Candlelight. Performed in the stunning heritage listed St George’s Cathedral, Bach by Candlelight promises the classics with a twist – a unique performance by a world-class jazz saxophonist; the full might of the Cathedral’s West Organ; and even Grumpy Bach himself.

Together with new partners HWL Ebsworth, Australia’s largest law firm by number of partners, and City of Perth, PCO is excited to present selections from Johannes Sebastian Bach’s enormous catalogue of works, showcasing the exceptional skill and nuance within the ensemble.

Respected WA actor James Hagan will breathe life into the evening in a very literal sense. Adding an extra dimension to the performance, Equity Award winning Hagan will appear as ‘Grumpy Bach’ himself, offering concert goers insights into 18th century Germany and the world as Bach knew it.

Comestibles and Barton Jones Wines will create an evening menu of complimentary German food, wines and beers. Guests will also be able enjoy a cash bar with wine and beer.

J.S. Bach, renowned as an eminent organist and harpsichordist in his day, was prolific in his output of music during the high Baroque period of the 1700s.

Highlights of the candlelit night will include Bach’s epic Toccata from ‘Toccata and Fugue in D Minor’ to open the concert, performed by Stewart Smith, WA’s leading baroque organ and harpsichordist. This show-stopping piece will demonstrate the full power of the Cathedral’s West Organ, one of the largest mechanical-action instruments in Western Australia with a massive 3516 pipes (the organ at Perth Concert Hall contains 3000 pipes).

‘Air on a G String’, popularly used as a wedding processional as well as in films and TV shows such as Runaway Bride, Se7en, The West Wing and Mozart in the Jungle, will be reimagined as Jamie Oehlers, winner of the World Saxophone Competition 2003 and one of Australia’s leading saxophonists, improvises over the incredibly famous walking bassline.

Bach by Candlelight is part of the PCO Heritage Series, which sees the orchestra perform in heritage buildings around Perth.

Presented by Perth Chamber Orchestra.
