It is a long-standing tradition for many of the great jazz clubs in New York (and elsewhere) to offer a Monday night residency to a first-rate big band. And this will be the case at Bird’s Basement, for most Monday nights throughout the year.

Bird’s Big Band is a stellar ensemble, under the direction of renowned composer and arranger, Andrew Murray. Having won the inaugural National Big Band Competition for composition/arrangement in 2009, Andrew formed his ATM 15, to explore his ideas of how the traditional big band approach could be given a more contemporary edge. The ATM 15 has released 2 albums, and is still going strong.

With Bird’s Big Band, Andrew will place more emphasis on the classic, swinging repertoire, given the depth and power of sound that only a big band can deliver. The band will feature some of Melbourne’s top improvising musicians, with some of Melbourne’s finest jazz singers set to join the band as occasional featured guests.

Michael Fraser, Paddy McMullin, Mat Jodrell (trumpets); Alistair Parsons, Andrew Murray, Michael Potts (trombones); Tim Wilson, Carlo Barbaro, Stephen Byth, Lachie McLean (saxophones), Darrin Archer (piano), Tamara Murphy (bass), Hugh Harvey (drums).

This is an a la carte evening where pizza and calzones are ordered from the upstairs Beer Wine and Calzone, made to order and delivered in minutes. Pizzas are priced from $14.
