Celebrating the anticipated release of her debut EP Temptation’s Door, Cairns-based singer-songwriter Brealyn Sheehan is gearing up for a special hometown launch this April. The intimate showcase will bring to fruition months of hard-work and a lifetime of inspiration. The ethereal songstress has been honing her craft for a while, with the last two years spent on building a profile, fan base and finding her personal style. Temptation’s Door is a testimony to romantic reverence, and to friendship and familial love, touching on universal themes of not only emotion, desire and longing. Leading into her debut six-track, Brealyn released her first single offering to radio in February.

The suggestive Forbidden Fruit captivated tastemakers, steadily making its way up the AIRIT AMRAP regional chart, debuting at #8 and still sitting at #5 at the end of March, with the potential for even more movement in the future. Forbidden Fruit was a perfect introduction to Brealyn’s sassy style and intimate lyrical content. Launching her EP will enable the songstress to bring Forbidden Fruit and the entire EP into a live setting. While the singer-songwriter is a well-known face around Cairns, she is usually seen playing solo, in duo or trio, and has only played a few festival dates with the full band. For this special release performance, she’s assembled a full backing band, which includes double bass player Steven ‘Papa’ Stanley and lead guitarist Johnny Tyler, perfectly representing the sound from the EP.

Adding to the significance of the evening, Brealyn will also be supported by Far North Queensland local favourites Blck Bird and Katie Jay. When it came to picking the first of what will end up being many shows to showcase the EP, a hometown gig was an obvious choice. “The Cairns launch at the Crate 59 Gallery will be a chance for me to showcase the tracks from the EP as well as some of my other original songs,” says Brealyn.

“Crate 59 provides an intimate setting and is known for its many creative events, so it felt like the perfect location for the launch. It will be a rare chance for people to hear the songs live with the accompaniment of the band. I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of local support and encouragement from the beginning from friends, family and people I’ve gotten to know along the way. Performing in front of a familiar audience is very special and certainly makes me strive to give it my all.”

The Temptation’s Door EP effortlessly explores genres from jazz, folk and blues, placing Brealyn alongside contemporaries such as Sarah Blasko, Clare Bowditch and Sarah McLachlan; her lush instrumentation providing the perfect backdrop to her haunting and unique tone. Produced by fellow North Queenslander, The Middle East’s Mark Myers at Big Sister Studios in Cairns, the EP is an apt representation of where Brealyn is at this stage in her career, and how she wants to move forward. Finding a kindred spirit in her producer helped bring the EP to life and finding herself a second home in the studio in her hometown definitely helped draw out the necessary inspiration.
