Rachelle Durkin, back in Sydney after acclaimed performances at the Met in New York, brings the beauty and brilliance of her glorious coloratura to the role of Armida; Swedish tenor Leif Aruhn-Solén as Rinaldo offers a compelling portrait of the flawed hero. Directed by US rising star Crystal Manich, with the Orchestra of the Antipodes performing on Classical instruments under the baton of the indomitable Antony Walker, this performance will be a feast for the senses.

The Story of Armida:
The Saracen sorceress Armida has cast her web of seduction over the solider Rinaldo: caught in her spell, he has abandoned his comrades and thrown in his lot with the enemy, just to be with her.

When Rinaldo’s sense of duty finally triumphs over Armida’s enchantment and he returns to his camp, she realises too late that he has taken her heart with him. Unable to win back Rinaldo’s love, Armida is determined to have vengeance instead.

Armida was the last opera Haydn created for the opulent surroundings of the Eszterhazy Palace, where it received a phenomenal 54 performances; Haydn himself judged it his best opera. Pinchgut is proud to bring this masterpiece to the stage.
