Trading places at the stage throughout the performance, two trios juxtaposes original compositions. Melody and simplicity are common threads weaving a story that twists and turns through each ensemble change. Audiences are taken on a journey offering an insight into the identity of contemporary jazz in Melbourne.

Drawing inspiration from the sensibilities of pop lyricism and melody, Refraction melds various colours of contemporary jazz into a compelling soundscape. Centred on drummer Chris Broomhead’s compositions, the trio celebrates the sanctity of simplicity, upholding the primacy of melody whilst leaving space for ensemble interaction and improvisation.

The album As We Were was a finalist in the top five of The Age Music Victoria Genre Awards 2015 for Best Jazz Album. Their 2016 album Inerrant Space continues the trio’s evolution. With Chris Broomhead: drums| Brenton Foster: piano| Jordan Tarento: bass.

Jeremy Woolhouse Trio: Gallery of Lives

Pianist Jeremy Woolhouse depicts personal stories and characters in a series of musical sketches for trio. Exploring the reflective and meditative qualities of musical narrative, his compositions are moving and evocative. Jeremy's simple, understated sound is inspired by the aesthetics of ECM jazz recordings.

Jeremy received critical acclaim for his composition, recordings and performance in Woolhouse-Michailidis-Robertson, Birchall and Woolhouse and Silverbeat projects. His signature melodic lyricism and elegant use of harmony shine in a style which fuses jazz, classical and South American music.

With Jeremy Woolhouse: piano, Chris Broomhead: drums, Isaac Gunnoo: bass.
