“Punks For West Papua” was announced last week in the Official Selection for the LA Independent Film Festival Awards. This is the 4th American laurel the doco has received so far, along with winning awards at the Hollywood International Documentary Awards, Miami Independent Film Festival and San Diego’s IndieFEST Film Awards.

Following the success of a recent airing in Sydney, the award winning “Punks For West Papua” documentary is heading on the road for the special screening events in cities around Australia with guest appearances by filmmaker Anthony ‘Ash’ Brennan and performances from local punk legends in each town. The Sydney and Brisbane events will also play host to the Leader of the Free West Papua Campaign and two time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Benny Wenda.

Created by Brennan and narrated by Basia Bonkowski, this 46 minute film tells of the Aussie punk scene’s fight for the West Papuans, turning a fundraising event into an Australia wide benefit involving over 50 bands in 7 cities around the country, making Punks For West Papua the biggest and no doubt loudest punk rock showcase in the nation’s history. Sydney punk band Diggers With Attitude’s Jody Bartolo spearheaded the movement, and a midnight text message to friend Ash Brennan started the wheels in motion to video the events and create the documentary.

“Punks For West Papua” is an intriguing story of one man’s selfless gesture that inspired a nation, and is recommended viewing for not just fans of punk rock but for anybody who believes in justice.
