Yo Yo

This month we have the incredibly groovy tones of Renetta Joy and the ever trancendent groove of Jon Cotton and the Book Keepers for the funkiest Thursday night residency in the history of Sydney (this is not a verified fact).

Free entry with a collection hat being passed around for the bands with biggest donator getting to keep the hat. $9 meals and great beer and vibes on the lounge or on the dance floor.

Renetta Joy
Renetta Joy is Sydney’s newest soul-rock and R&B outfit made up of Aislinn Bevis and four of the tightest rhythm sectioners you’ll see. As five of the greatest friends that anyone could have, they lock into pockets of groove like a band with lifetimes worth of experience behind them.
Aislinn’s oldest influences of pop stars like Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera, through to the soul/hip-hop legends of today like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo, shine through in the orchestration of Renetta Joy’s material. The gospel-like harmonies that soar out over their bluesy riffs and jazzy chordal progressions seems to add an orchestra of instruments that fill an entire room with good energy and warmth and has everybody feeling the need to move.

Jon Cotton
Raised on Fred Astaire and the Fresh Prince of Belair and tethered between the cocky and the cavalier Jon Cotton leads a revolution revolving around the hip flicks and vocal tricks of a crooner in a snap back. A front man doing the frezno in a fedora sung out on D’Angelo and Sinatra. He can teach you how to dougie and how to drink a single malt. A live show known for its ineffable class and swagger in a room full of flailing limbs and head tilted shut eye choirs belt anthems with carelessly raised hands. A believer in sex and chivalry and in gospel being a message not a genre. From vaudeville, to big band, to 808s, Jon Cotton is the adopted apostle of appropriation who will meet you kindly between Gene Kelly and Frank Ocean on the edge of the stage and the begging of reverie.
