Join singer Leah Cotterell as she courageously shares her life story as a mental health carer: fighting stigma and systems failure, finding comfort in the joys of recovery.

The Pleasure of Sad Songs is a moving musical memoir about a family living with agoraphobia, schizophrenia and dementia. As a carer, advocate and witness to the journeys of her mother and brother, Leah delves into the shadows of isolation with the shining light of empathy and compassion. One of Australia’s most soulful singers, Leah puts her whole heart into honouring her family story, embracing her freedom as an artist to push back against a life time of stigma.

This intimate production delicately balances powerful stories, beautiful songs and evocative family images. It is the outcome of Leah’s postgraduate research at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music where she is currently a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate. In her research Leah explores communication through songs and singing, proposing that sharing music allows us to immerse ourselves in emotion, without consequence. This is The Pleasure of Sad Songs.
