Art Gallery of WA

The next exhibition in the Art Gallery of Western Australia's WA Focus series is a joint display of works by three Western Australian artists known for their long-standing interest in abstract forms.

Trevor Richards, Alex Spremberg and Jurek Wybraniec have created new works across various media including painting, works on paper and sculpture for the WA Focus program. These works borrow from popular culture and the everyday, providing a platform from which the artists refashion physical materials, objects and space into new works that highlight the artists' individual approach to abstraction.

For works in the WA Focus exhibition, Alex Spremberg uses discarded record covers to mix the visual language of the music industry with painterly abstraction, the two colliding through the application of paint onto the original record covers.

Trevor Richards moves beyond his self-determined colour system BYOG (blue, yellow, orange and green) to present works that draw from objects and everyday items including his own home's geometric tiled flooring.

Jurek Wybraniec makes painted, wall-based sculptures that create a perceptual mood set through borrowed cinematic dialogue.

Together, these three respected artists eloquently explore the conceptual, formal and material possibilities of contemporary abstraction.
