Crown Street Women’s Hospital 1893–1983
The history of Sydney’s pioneering maternity hospital is also a history of medical care for women in Australia, from the days of untrained midwives to alternative birthing units. Crown Street Women’s Hospital was the largest women’s hospital in NSW, located at Surry Hills. It was a referral hospital for women throughout NSW and a leading teaching centre for obstetricians and midwives. It also had a role in caring for the poorest and most marginalised women in Sydney. Dr Judith Godden, a professional historian, and an expert on the history of healthcare, will enlighten us on this topic, which was published last year. Come along and hear this intriguing story.
Everyone welcome. The lecture is free and will be followed by supper.
