Her name’s Channthy, she’s a Khmer diva in a swinging ‘60s mini-dress. They’re a Detroit Mowtown-loving South East Asia group. No, it’s not a scene from Kill Bill. It’s Cambodian Space Project, a critically acclaimed Aussie‐Cambodian band that is equal parts '60s Cambodian rock and roll and trippy psychedelic Khmer soul.

This extraordinary band has been at the forefront of an astonishing cultural revival in Cambodia, singing life back into the lost divas and rock 'n' roll legends of Cambodia’s golden age of music. Fans of bands like the 5,6,7,8s, Gogol Bordello and King Khan will already be lovers of Cambodian Space Project. They’ve toured rock stages throughout Asia, Europe and Australia, wowed audiences at the prestigious Hebbel Am Ufer Theatre in Berlin with their theatrical show Galaxy Khmer and performed the premiere of their rock opera Hanuman Spaceman to sell-out crowds at this year’s Sydney Festival. Now touring Motown to The Mekong across Cambodia, we’re lucky they even had time to stop to breathe let alone rock The Rails at this Darwin Festival gig.

Opening the show will be legendary locals The Mystics. These pioneers of the Indigenous music scene in the Territory were hugely popular in the 1960s and they have recently reformed. With a new-look line-up, but the same great ‘60s and ‘70s classic rock and country tunes, they are set to get the party started.
