The stunning Canberra Wind Symphony presents an evening of wind orchestra brilliance, with contemporary works from fascinating composers telling their New York stories with intriguing rhythms, textures and colours.

Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Geoff Grey muses, “Canberra audiences are spoilt for choice when it comes to Broadway-style musicals, so I’ve chosen to present the more honest, dirty NYC that I’ve experienced with ‘Asphalt Cocktail’ and ‘The Big Apple Symphony’, and while we are also presenting ‘Symphonic Dances from West Side Story’, we have deliberately stepped away from the chorus line numbers and belting Broadway anthems.”

But will there be a nod to Liza Minnelli or Frank Sinatra in there somewhere? That just remains to be seen. “We want to drop our guests into a musical streetscape to capture a day in the life of a New Yorker, rather than just showing New York as a glossy tourist attraction.”

This music captures abstracts of New York City. It is vibrant and modern and pushes the envelope artistically. John Mackey named his ‘Asphalt Cocktail’ whilst walking down Columbus Avenue bouncing ideas off a composer companion. Johan de Meij says his symphony is "a musical interpretation of the spirit, glamour and indifference of one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Listening to this symphony is perhaps as enervating as an actual visit to Manhattan." The dances from Bernstein’s triumphant ‘West Side Story’ are so NYC that they had to be included!

Come and celebrate this great, eclectic city with 40 of the Capital Region’s finest professional players as they combine to bring only the best wind literature to the stage. Quite simply—they’re captivating, engaging and brilliant! Be quick to secure your tickets for this one-off event.
