Dendy invites you to three exciting movies from the Czech Republic and Slovakia to bring cheer to your weekend. Our main film festival may have moved to March 2018, but we know that’s an awfully long time to wait so we’ve prepared a small selection of handpicked films for you to enjoy over our special weekend of films.

We kick off our weekend with an award-winning story about Jan Masaryk, the flamboyant Czech ambassador to the UK. Set in the volatile pre-war years, his fight against his own demons is juxtaposed with the plight of his homeland which was used as a bargaining chip in European appeasement, eventually leading to Nazi annexation of Czechoslovakia.

Our next feature is a box office hit, a fantasy-comedy viewed by over a million people in the Czech Republic alone, it tells the story of the confused angel Petronel and his partner in crime, the devil Uriah. It is rare for a sequel to be as successful as the original movie but this delightful film has done just that. The film’s director, Jirí Strach will be on hand as our special guest to discuss the making of the film and to answer any of your questions in a Q&A after the screening of the movie.

We will close out our weekend of film on a high with a gripping political thriller from Slovakia. Set in the 1990s and based on real events, it follows the kidnapping of a president’s son and the fight for political power in the period just after the split of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

All films are with English subtitles.
