We are delighted to invite you to a tour stop in Waroona for the icons of Australia tour this August, celebrating England’s famous art pottery Moorcroft, established in 1897, who has created a handmade collection of pottery featuring Icons of Australia. This is free of charge event, and we simply ask you to let Drakesbrook Antiques know you are coming by the 1st August.

Touring with the collection this year is Moorcroft’s Chairman himself, Hugh Edwards, published author of a trilogy of books about the famous art pottery. He will lecture about how he sold his own valuable collection of Moorcroft to buy the company in the 1980's and assisted with inspired creativity allowed it to flourish. As you are all aware, the diversity of flora and fauna across Australia is, we believe, without parallel anywhere in the world, with jaw-dropping natural phenomenon, captured over one hundred years ago by the founder of Moorcroft himself, William Moorcroft, as well as nostalgic visions, like paddle steamers in the great Murray River, where billabongs and swamps are draped in flowering eucalyptus.

Sometimes it is the tiniest forms that can become a mighty piece of art in the Applied Arts. Nothing is perhaps more lovely than clusters of purple glycine clandestine with Australia’s biggest butterfly, the Cairns Birdwing, with its yellow and turquoise coloration in-between jet black webbing. This comes as a traditional ginger jar within the collection. What you will see in the collection is the antiques of the future - each piece crafted by hand using age old traditions which show that the Arts & Crafts movement is still alive and kicking. Pieces are available to purchase as limited editions. In a celebration of colour, Moorcroft has created what is said to be the finest art pottery collection ever to embrace the Icons of Australia.

Each piece of Moorcroft is entirely handmade with each design outlined by hand in liquid clay before being hand painted. The unusual two kiln firings at Moorcroft, the second with a vitrified glaze, allow the colours to sparkle like jewels.
