In the city of Mahagonny, Hiram Munch – businessman, racketeer, dealer in human flotsam and jetsam – runs his motley band of beggars with an iron fist. The bridge across the river that divides the city’s north and south, rich and poor, doubles as the public gallows.

Among the rootless souls of the south, the prostitute Maggie Knowles – “Magnolia” – is a Joan of Arc figure; her story is a perilous quest for self-respect, happiness and love, thwarted equally by those she hates, and those she loves.

A rambunctious, sharply observed story of Haves and Have Nots wading through a moral cesspit of oppression, fragile love and vengeance, Mahagonny has close parallels to our modern society.

The legendary guitarist/ composer Tony Durant drew inspiration for his darkly comic, bitingly satiric musical from Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera and Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.

Durant came to prominence in Australia as co-lead guitarist (along with the late, great Johnny Leopard) in the ground-breaking Dave Warner’s From the Suburbs in the late 70s, but, years earlier, led the English progressive folk-rock band Fuchsia, which, after decades of obscurity, is enjoying critical acclaim and a cult following around the world.

Durant has gathered a team of talented collaborators to bring Mahagonny to the stage: his long-standing colleague Dave Warner has written the script, and the seasoned Rowan Greaves will direct celebrated pub-rock madmen Dick Haynes (Loaded Dice) and Bill Beare (Fingerprints), along with rising star Sam Devenport, whose credits range from Tame Impala to international touring productions of Phantom of the Opera.

The Hellenic Club is the venue for the world premiere season of Mahagonny-Behind Innocent Eyes, Feb.1st to 5th, and it will be one of the must-see highlights of the 2017 Perth Fringe.
