Ancestry is a celebration of the rich musical ancestry of two leading virtuoso musicians Matthew Fagan of Ango-Celtic, Jewish, German, Spanish lineage on unique ten-string Spanish guitar and six-string Godin guitar, and amazing Czech violinist Romana Geermans from Prague who met in Melbourne and formed a profound musical partnership. Ancestry explores the rich story of emigration, survival of internment in concentration camp and pursuit of new freedom and opportunity in the emerging cultural life of Australia in the 1900’s to the present day.

From Matthew Fagan’s musical ancestry from Covent Garden and Melbourne child prodigy Cecil Parkes touring concert halls in USA during WW1 at the age of 13 and in Australia with Dame Nellie Melba, and the story of a Czech emigrant Romana Geermans who introduces Australia to the music composed by her step-father Frantisek Domazlicky, the last Czech Jewish orchestral composer to survive internment in Nazi concentration camps including Camp Terezin. Romana from Prague, also a child prodigy, at the age of 15 toured with the renowned Czechoslovak Chamber Orchestra internationally for 7 years.

The Concert Ancestry will be a truly special program performed with passion, renewed vigour and virtuosity featuring compositions from contemporary Czech Composer Frantisek Domazlicky (1913-1997) including “Song without Words” composed during internment at Terezin concentration camp.
Music performed by Matthew Fagan’s ancestors and which features on Matthew’s CD Virtuoso-A Homage to my Ancestors, including Rimsky Korsakov, Mozart, Paganini, Vivaldi and Traditional Spanish Music.

Also Gypsy Fire favourites including Gypsy Jazz masters from Django Reinhardt to Stephan Grapelli, Matthew Fagan’s original Celtic and Flamenco music from his successful CD Indigo Moon and O’Carolan’s Celtic harp and lute music arranged for guitar and violin.

Gypsy Fire, gypsy jazz, celtic and world music group was founded by Matthew Fagan in 1997 and pioneered the Australian manouche gypsy jazz stage with fiery performances at Port Fairy Folk Festival, Castlemaine State Festival, National Folk Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival and more. Matthew and Romana were original members of the group with highlight performances at the National Gallery of Victoria and St Pauls Cathedral Melbourne.

Ancestry explores how we all are knowingly and unknowingly shaped by our ancestral stories and how emigration and aspiration for a richer life are just as relevant today as when our ancestors came to Australia.
