Set in a time of economic strife and famine in 19th Century France, Les Misérables is a completely ‘sung-through’ musical. With great songs and sweeping choruses including I Dreamed a Dream, Bring Him Home, On My Own, and Do You Hear the People Sing, Rockhampton Musical Union's annual musical is sure to entertain.

This iconic show is based on the novel Les Misérables by French poet and novelist Victor Hugo, and set in 19th Century France. It was penned by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Alan Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel (original French lyrics) and Herbert Kretzmer (English lyrics).

The story involves all the themes of the human spirit from love to loss and rumination to redemption. Wonderful songs and sweeping musical set pieces such as I Dreamed a Dream, Bring Him Home, On My Own, and Do You Hear the People Sing allow the performers the opportunity to draw an audience into the story.

Since its premiere performance in Paris in 1980, audiences have continued to grow and productions have been mounted by both professional and community companies.

The Rockhampton Musical Union Choir was one of the first amateur companies in Australia to present this show in 1993.
